There are a nomination of about 800 words that needs to be banished for the year 2016, as reported by Lake Superior State University and here just are some of it:
Starting your sentence with the word "So" - Totally useless, just get to it!
BAE - Means before anyone else, but this term has already been so annoying many people, thinking that it is stupid to call your significant other 'bae.' Others would prefer to be called babe and being called bae.
HACK - It is being overly used for anything that can be termed as a tip but many use this term instead making it overly mis-used as well. Technically the word 'hack,' involves illegal breaching of security of legal entities. The call is to use it correctly.
POLAR VORTEX - Described as being over sensationalized when what the speaker only means is winter. Others think it's meaningless and overly used.
SKILL SET - Why use the term 'skill set' when the word 'skill' is the most correct and proper term for anything that describes a person's ability or talent? E.i. "Do you have a skill?" "I have a skill.." "You are very skilled."
FOODIE - Describes food lovers? But everybody eats already! Big reason why this term is being shunned, because as one student complains, "You don't call a person who loves wine a winnie, or a person who loves beer a beerie."
CURATE / CURATED - The word 'curate' used mainly in fine arts and museums giving it some special significance. Everything now though seems to be curated. If bringing back the word 'selected' is already fine, why use 'curate?' That is overly pretentious!
SWAG - Does it even mean anything? It seems like many people have used it on anything that is cool and un-cool. This word is meaningless!
FRIEND-RAISING - This word devalues the real meaning of the word friend. It simply means that you are making friends just so you can have company, in turn, them getting some benefit in terms of money and kind.
CRAY-CRAY - Is an over sensationalized way to say the word 'crazy.'
ENHANCED INTERROGATION - You can use the word 'torture,' it means the same.
TAKEAWAY - Another term that people use when they ask that question, "What do you think of this..? Or "What lesson did you learn from..?" The technical meaning of take away though is that, it is a sports term, where if one takes away a ball in a ball game. In UK, 'take away' is when you order food from the restaurant as US is, 'to go.'
