Jennifer Lopez Refused to Play an NYPD Cop in 'Shades of Blue'; What Made Her Change Her Mind?

Jennifer Lopez has been in the entertainment industry for 25 years, and she has always fascinated her audience whether as an actress, a singer, a dancer, or a reality talent show judge. Soon, she will be back on TV to play an NYPD cop.

After playing a hot high school English teacher being stalked by a hunky psychopath student in the thriller, 'The Boy Next Door,' J.Lo was not really looking for another acting role. NBC offered her to take on the lead role of the 'Shades of Blue,' but she was reluctant as she did not want to commit to a TV series. She shares with Entertainment Weekly, "I definitely wasn't looking for an acting role on TV." She had appeared in a crime series in the 90s entitled, Second Chances,' and she found it rather difficult. So she did not really see herself in another hour drama.

But the network was sure she was the best one to play the part, especially since she originally pitched the idea in the first place. NBC apparently responded to her strongly saying, 'How are you not playing this role?' Eventually, they were able to convince the total performer to go on board. "...there's one reason why I did it: The material was so good," she reveals.

Jennifer is also the executive producer of the show, and part of her task is to decide on who to cast on each role, and give inputs on the script. She personally chose actors Drea de Matteo and Ray Liotta, who contribute to pushing everyone to be at their best on set, according to Lopez.

The actress plays Harlee, a police under one of the Brooklyn units of the NYPD. Lopez shares, "It's called Shades of Blue for a reason, since between right and wrong, there's a lot of gray area. At the end of the day, it's based on society and what's happening."
