This house aptly named 'Fallingwater' is settled magically on a 30 feet waterfall in southwest of Pennsylvania. Designed by the famous Frank Lloyd Wright, this home was built for the Kaufmann family in the late 1930s. This one of a kind structure became so famous that it was featured as a cover of the Time magazine in 1938, and is now a National Historic Landmark.
The family decided to have the home constructed because their hometown, Pittsburgh, was getting too polluted. The Kauffmans loved going to the mountains and staying in their summer camp home located along a mountain stream referred to as Bear Run. Their vacation home used to be a very small cabin, without heat or running water. Eventually, they thought it was time to build a more modern one.
They tapped the legendary architect Wright to design the house for them, and they were shocked when they saw his plan. Instead of their house having a great view of the water form, it was actually sitting on top of the falls. According to their website, "Frank Lloyd Wright told them (The Kaufmanns) that he wanted them to live with the waterfalls, to make them part of their everyday life, and not just to look at them now and then."
Now, 'Fallingwater' is more than a tourist spot. It offers different tours for families, school groups, and even individuals. There are fun youth programs and workshops like poetry, short story or graphic novel writing. There are also guided educational tours for school groups like the 'Fallingwater Math Trail' and Preschool Hands-on Workshops. Its dairy farm has been renovated and it now serves as a function area for conferences and meetings. The courtyard of the old barn has been a beautiful location for rustic weddings.
Touring the stunning estate could be physically demanding as it is situated in the mountains, but having the chance to explore the unbelievable architecture combined with the wonders of nature makes it worth it.
