"The Hunger Games" is set to hit the live stage in 2016. Lionsgate film studio has announced that it is planning a stage version of the best-selling story.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the young-adult novels and film adaptation will launch in a London theater in the summer of 2016.
Lionsgate will be working with both the US-based Triangular Entertainment and Imagine Nation from the Netherlands to bring forth a live version of the dystopian society that pits teenagers in an annual fight to the death.
The theatrical experience will be produced by Robin de Levita, an award-winning producer and co-founder of Imagine Nation.
"Robin de Levita and the entire production team are the perfect partners for extending The Hunger Games franchise into a live theatrical experience," quoted THR of Lionsgate chief marketing officer Tim Palen said in a statement. "Their creative genius, combined with world-class production values and state-of-the-art technology will provide a uniquely immersive experience for fans around the world."
"I'm thrilled to be partnering with an innovative next-generation studio like Lionsgate on a property that resonates so deeply with global audiences. The theater is a fantastic medium to bring the many meaningful layers of Suzanne Collins' writing to life," added De Levita.
This live show is the latest expansion of "The Hunger Games" franchise. Per Variety, back in May, CEO Jon Feltheimer shared plans for a U.S. tour of "The Hunger Games: The Exhibition" in the summer of 2015.
The first two "The Hunger Games" films -- based on the best-selling novels of writer Suzanne Collins -- has grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide.
The last book has been split into two parts, with the "The Hunger games: Mockingjay - Part 1," set for release later this month. The final installment, "Mockingjay Part 2" is due November of 2015.
Jennifer Lawrence is returning to the film series to reprise her role as lead character Katniss Everdeen. Lawrence is joined by a powerful cast that includes Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Julianne Moore, Donald Sutherland, and Natalie Dormer, to name a few.
The film's plot centers on "Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in District 13 after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin (Julianne Moore) and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courage."
To date, there is no world whether the newly announced live performance will feature any of the any stars from the films.
