Actor Matt Damon is set to reprise his role as Jason Bourne after skipping the fourth installment of the popular action franchise.
"Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" star Ben Affleck helped his friend make the news on Friday while at the red carpet taking to E! News.
"Well, (Damon's) going to be doing a Bourne movie next fall when I've just completely lost any semblance of physical fitness. So --" said Affleck.
Damon confirmed the news saying: "Yes, next year" and added that he isn't the only one making a comeback.
"It'll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. [Director] Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that's all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes," clarified the actor.
Damon took on the title role of CIA assassin Jason Bourne for the first three installments of the Robert Ludlum's spy novels. The last time the Hollywood A-Lister played the title role for the film was in 2007 for "The Bourne Ultimatum." He bowed out of 2012's "The Bourne Legacy," which saw "Avengers" star Jeremy Renner take over with a story line that focused on CIA agent Aaron Cross.
IGN recalled how Damon openly admitted earlier that he would only return as titular character with Greengrass. The pair teamed up for the second and third Bourne films, "The Bourne Supremacy" and "The Bourne Ultimatum."
This is good news for franchise fans as late last year, Greengrass indicated that he wasn't interested in returning to take the reins on anymore of the spy-based series. "In the end I felt I had given it my all in two films I'm very proud of and didn't want to make another if I didn't believe it could be as good if not better," quoted Deadline of the director.
He continued: "I couldn't come up with an idea, and the business reality of franchises is that when a studio has a Bourne, they're obliged to make one every couple of years. I discovered in my heart I didn't have another one in me. The best thing was to move on, have someone else come in and make their mark on it."
Based on the news that the dynamic duo will be returning, it appears a good plot has been developed.
According to The Verge, plot detail have yet to be revealed. "'The Bourne Legacy' starred Jeremy Renner in an entirely different role and met with a lukewarm critical reception. It's still unclear what new adventures Bourne has ahead of him, but fans can now fully expect a continuation to his story."
