After listing his Upper East Side mansion for a whopping $80 million, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim just took the property of the market.
According to The Real Deal, the mansion in Fifth Avenue was bought by Slim for only $36 million five years ago. The site reported that they tried to reach out to the listing broker of the property to ask for the reason why it was taken off the market and if it is coming back with a reduced price; however, the site did not receive any reply.
New York Curbed first reported the listing of the property and said that it is trying to shatter the current record for the most expensive townhouse, which is held by the Harkness Mansion, which was purchased for $53 million in 2006. The 20,000-square-foot mansion which was first built in 1901 boasts lower floors with articulated limestone and an entrance that is capped with wrought iron marquee.
The mansion also has soaring high ceilings and hand-carved wood paneling. It also features a stunning staircase which rises to five stories. The upper floors are dressed in brick which is extravagantly decorated with limestone elements. The top floor shows the dramatic skylight and is accessed through a separate staircase. The house also has a terrace which overlooks the iconic Metropolitan Museum.
According to Forbes, Slim's current net worth is $48.8 billion. He is a telecom tycoon which has 300 million mobile phone and landline subscribers in 19 countries through the telecom company, America Movil which he also controls. Slim is also known for buying different assets in other counties like Spain and also has oil production contracts in Mexico. He also has a foundation under his name and it recently partnered with the nonprofit Autism Speaks to give out tools which can translate information into Spanish.
