It is a challenge landlords would have to face head on.
Australians are quickly adapting to changes the modern times bring and the house renters, which compose of about seven million, nearly a third of Australian households, are on top of the list. Home renters in Australia know what they want and they will get them.
According to News.com.au, they are no longer confined to waiting to save enough funds to buy their own home or being low income earners who will never be able to afford mortgage. The landscape is changing.
A survey released by Optus' Renter of the Future, conducted by McCrindle Research, states that three out of ten renters consider themselves as "choice renters," which means they also consider themselves tech savvy, and they are. Included in the same report is that these choice renters would favor a lifestyle fuelled by freedom, flexibility and choice this year and perhaps would set the trend for the same.
Mark McCrindle, a social demographer, said, "We wanted to understand the renter and find out who they are. Demographically they're got punch, geographically they're got punch and as we've found from this technologically they're amongst the earliest adopters."
He added, "There's this idea that the great Aussie dream is to move into a home that you own and if you haven't done that then the dream hasn't come true for you. But with generational change that's just not true. You've got a lot of people who are the choice renters because they prefer the lifestyle. And they themselves might be landlords so financially they're rocketing ahead."
The report adds that once the renters have found the perfect location, these tenants have specific practical "must haves" before making decision, such as the following:
1. Parking (38 percent)
2. Pet friendly (32 percent)
3. Cable Internet (31 percent)
4. Strength of mobile signal (25 percent)
5. Number of power points in a room (22 percent)
The average Aussie renters move every 1.8 years and almost a third of the respondents says that the most irritating thing about moving in to a new place is the time it takes to reconnect to the Internet.
Ben White, acting managing director of marketing and products at Optus said that the modern renters demand choice and it is important that it satisfies their on-the-go lifestyles.
