Home Design Tips: Decorating with White

When thinking of a home design project such as a paint touch-up, most homeowners would go for a warm or soft color palette. Some tend to steer clear of painting their homes white, given the somewhat clinical feel that comes with the said color. However, with a few accent pieces, an all-white room can be transformed into a warm and classy living space.

A report from Country Living shared the home design concept of Mandy Reeves for her and her family's Tennessee home. Reeves had the vision of a "rustic" home with separate rooms for the dining, living and cooking spaces. She enlisted the expertise of Nashville architect Betsy Pogue where they, along with Reeves' husband Randy, went on to plan and design a home which conveys an "age old" quality. ITo achieve that, the house was painted predominantly in white to further highlight the home's classic architecture.

Mandy told Country Living, "Houses are meant to be enjoyed. Ours may be white, but it's not too precious. We truly live in every inch."

Most of the furniture pieces that Mandy used followed the white theme such as couches, kitchen counters and cabinets. However, to make the living spaces more inviting, accent pieces were introduced such as large wooden beams strategically placed on the ceiling of the living room. A dark grey-colored door and brown velvet arm chairs also helped make the room feel warm.

A predominantly white kitchen may look sterile to others, but pieces such as a decorative lighting fixture, a wooden stool, dark wooden floors and stainless steel appliances can help transform it into an elegant cooking space. These were some of the design strategies that Mandy did for her Tennessee home, according to the same report.

Apart from colorful fixtures, homeowners can also opt to introduce contrasting pieces to an all-white kitchen such as a dark-colored countertop or brightly painted cabinets, Current in Carmel reports. White remains to be a popular color for kitchen cabinets; however, colorful hues are starting to become a rising trend. Apart from black and other bright palettes, the color grey is also becoming a "common" color for counter cabinets, the same report stated.
