New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Would Like to Transform the Subway with Free USB Chargers, Wi-Fi and Mobile Payments

Governor Andrew Cuomo started his campaign to transform the New York City's infrastructure back in July when he declared renderings for a $4 billion update to LaGuardia Airport.

According to 6SQFT, this past week, Cuomo pulled out all the stops, starting with the redevelopment of Penn Station for $3 billion, expansion of the Javits Center for $1 billion, and now, a huge venture to "modernize and fundamentally transform" the subway and the MTA.

Report says that the Cuomo's latest plan includes boosting the addition of more countdown clocks, adding electronic payment by 2018, supplying all stations with Wi-Fi by the end of this year and mobile phone service by the of 2017, and equipping both subways and buses with USB chragers.

"The MTA is absolutely vital to the daily functioning of New York City, but for too long it has failed to meet the region's growing size and strength," Cuomo said. "This is about doing more than just repair and maintain - this is thinking bigger and better and building the 21st century transit system New Yorkers deserve. We are modernizing the MTA like never before and improving it for years to come," as reported by MTA's website.

There are more than six million people who are using the New York City subway on its busiest days, and Cuomo's proposal is design to bring expedited improvements to their daily experience while improving a system that is more than a hundred years old. Cuomo's idea introduces new customer-friendly approach and advances current projects to bring meaningful innovations to the transit system that New York relies on.

"Once again Gov. Cuomo is stepping up on behalf of transit riders and transit workers," John Samuelsen, Transport Workers Union Local 100 President said. "These projects will greatly improve the commutes for scores of riders and we're proud to be doing our part."
