Home Design Trends: Sequin Pillows for Homes, A Growing Obsession?

Sequin pillows are gaining a huge following after a video showing the magic of "mermaid" pillows became viral.

Dallas TV journalist Steve Noviello recently discovered sequined "mermaid" pillows during a shopping trip at Nebraska Furniture Mart. A report by House Beautiful states that the journalist spotted what initially looked like navy sequin pillows, but with a simple swipe of the hand, the pillow's color switched to silver. Apart from color changes, various designs can also be "drawn" on the pillow such as animal prints, geometric patterns and letters.

Noviello even captured an entertaining video clip of the pillow on Facebook showing how it changes from one color to another, as well as the various designs he made. The video has since been viewed over 29 million times, with many people asking Noviello where they can get their own "mermaid" pillow.

Michael Shippy, a Texas chiropractor and Noviello's friend who accompanied him during the Nebraska Furniture Mart shopping trip, joked in the Facebook video clip that the rising home design trend is called a "mermaid" pillow because of its capability to change "like a fish into a woman," Tech Insider reports.  "They're $149 [at Nebraska Furniture Mart], but you have to realize that it's probably 1,000 different pillows in one. So it's really pennies on the dollar," Shippy added.

Aviva Stanoff, the creator of the sequin "mermaid" pillow, told Tech Insider that the pillow retails between $59 and $150 from her site. She also expressed her delight in knowing that the pillows have caught the attention of many people.

"As a textile designer that specializes in innovative home accessories, I am delighted and flattered that my pillows are causing such a ruckus online. We introduced these four years ago and to have this happen this week is amazing, surprising, and magical," she said

How does the pillow's design work? The pillow's sequins are reversible and feature a different color on each side. They are positioned on the pillow in a way to make flipping from one side to the other very easy. When a hand swipes the "mermaid" pillow in one direction, the sequins flip and show its reverse color.
