Atlanta's Historic Flatiron Building Gets Multi-Million Dollar Makeover

Even though the Flatiron Building in New York City is regarded as the more popular one, it's the Flatiron Building in downtown Atlanta (now known as FlatironCity) that's getting a $12 million renovation project.

As it turns out, the multi-million dollar project is to convert the building into "a space for technology startups and entrepreneurs, part of an effort to boost industries in the city. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CBTUH) reports:

"Proclaimed to be an effort to make Atlanta the technology hub of the Southeast, FlatironCity joins others such as the Atlanta Tech Village in supporting entrepreneurs by offering high-end technology resources and work spaces ranging from one desk to a whole floor. As part of this effort, the building includes a Microsoft Innovation Center - only the second one in the country - which offers 'a comprehensive set of technology, tools, and resources to startups, government, students and faculty.'"

Among the building's new tenants is Launch (launchjourney.com), a digital agency headquartered in Atlanta. Although the company has already moved in to the building, Launch will soon occupy the Flatiron Building's entire 9th floor on April 2016.

According to PRWeb, Launch is eager to join a community of technology startups within Atlanta. The press release states, "Launch is excited to be a part of a city-wide initiative to support technology startups and encourage those businesses to remain in Atlanta, making Atlanta the technology hub of the Southeast."

"We're looking forward to moving to FlatironCity where we'll be a part of a vibrant community of entrepreneurs and innovators," said Launch co-founder David Preiss.

Bradford Gilbert designed the 118-year-old Flatiron Building in downtown Atlanta, which was completed in 1897 - just five years before its New York counterpart (originally called the Fuller Building) was completed in 1902.

The 11-story building on Peachtree Street (near Woodruff Park) is Atlanta's second and oldest standing skyscraper. The Flatiron Building has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
