Over the past months, fans have debated whether Daryl Nixon of "The Walking Dead" is gay or straight, and after Sunday's rather devastating midseason finale of the show, Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl revealed that although it was clarified that Daryl was straight, his character's sexual orientation does not really matter, Entertainment Weekly reported.
During his appearance in the "Talking Dead", series creator Robert Kirkman finally revealed that Daryl was straight, TV Line reported.
Kirkman originally mentioned in the letter column of "The Walking Dead" comic book that there was a possibility that Daryl might be gay, and although the network carrying the series might have been fine with it, he clarified that he can now officially say "Daryl Dixon is straight."
In response to Kirkman's revelation, Reedus called into Entertainment Weekly radio to talk about the clarification of his character's sexual orientation, as well as reliving the scene of Beth's death, a character played by Emily Kinney.
According to the actor, he would have done whatever the story asked of him.
He described his character as "an honest, badass dude" with a lot of heart to him and his sexual orientation "doesn't really matter."
When asked about how it was like to film the last scenes with Kinney, Reedus confessed that it "was rough," adding that Kinney was not only a great actress but was also an amazing girl.
"What her character meant to our characters was a big deal, so to lose that was a very emotional day for everyone. It felt like you actually lost a friend," he said.
Reedus added that before the scene was filmed, he wanted to show everyone that he was really "devastated" by the moment, and that he was "taken off-guard."
"I think all the characters are sort of hanging on a thread. All of us are walking that fine line between completely savage and broken."
With regards to playing a character that always show's himself off as tough, Reedus explains that although Daryl was tough, he "doesn't puff out his chest and have to be tough. He's just tough."
But despite all the toughness and show of bravado, EW, pointed out the fact that there have been moments when Daryl showed his soft and tender side, including when his brother, Merle, in the series, turned into a walker and again, in Sunday's episode when Beth was shot.
According to Reedus, the toughness Daryl exhibited wa because of all the trauma he's been through in life, he explains that even though Daryl was a fighter, he never felt proud of himself after a fight.
The remaining episodes of "The Walking Dead" season 4 will start airing on Feb. 8, 2015.
