Pritzker Winner Álvaro Siza Tapped to Design New Hell's Kitchen Condo in New York

Developers Sumaida + Khurana and LENY have tapped Pritzker winning architect Álvaro Siza to design their latest project in New York City, a luxe Hell's Kitchen condo which is slated to start construction this year.

Siza is recognized for designing structures like Piscinas de Marés and Boa Nova Tea House in Portugal. The building, to be built at 611 West 56th Street on the corner of 11th Avenue, will be his first project in the U.S., according to The Real Deal.

The 172,000-square-foot, 34-story project will contain 80 units, including one- to four-bedroom units and a few penthouses. It will also have a private swimming pool, a landscaped roof garden, a children's play area, a fitness center, a spa, a screening room and entertainment spaces for its amenities.

Sumaida + Khurana and LENY bought part of the site for $55 million in 2015 from John Catsimatidis, a grocery mogul and one-time mayoral hopeful.

"The tower is expressed through a vertical grid of elegant proportions and depth that rises gracefully amongst neighboring glass towers," said Sumaida + Khurana founding partner, Amit Khurana.

Siza will team up with Kimberly Sheppard and Michael Gabellini of Gabellini Sheppard Associates in working with the interiors. They are planning to start the construction this summer and expecting to finish in 2019.

According to Dezeen, Siza has designed buildings in several South American and European countries as well as China and Korea, but has never done a project in the country.

"Álvaro Siza is a legendary master architect, having designed many of the world's most iconic buildings over the last half century," said Khurana in a statement. "We believe that this will be a seminal project that captures the elegance and profound subtlety that is at the heart of his work," he added.

Last year, the 82-year-old Siza was ordered to design the residential tower. Construction is expected to begin this May, with plans to fully finish in fall of 2018.
