Gold Clubs in Delaware is said to be one of the states' nuisance properties. AS a result some of these golf courses operating will be transformed into housing projects.
Delaware Online reports that the Gold Club has become a place for illegal drugs, shooting, stabbings and vehicle thefts since it was closed down by the Delaware Department of Justice. The Delaware State Police has received 237 calls of criminal nuisance concerns since early 2012. Because of the involvement of illegal activities involving drugs, gangs, guns and a material of disturbance to a nearby neighborhood Attorney General Matt Denn has ruled it a nuisance property.
The implementation of the Delaware Criminal Nuisance Abatement Act was what gave Attorney General Denn the power to step in and address the issue. He says that the goal is to stop the nuisance activity in the property as only as a last resort should all other actions fail.
This Week Community News says that a proposal from T&R Properties to build housing projects on half the property has been reviewed by the Delaware Planning Commission. The redevelopment which will be near U.S. Route 23 would mainly consist of 31 duplexes, seven commercial outlots and 208 apartments.
However the proposal has raised concerns from a number of members of the commission and neighbors in the area. If the development should push through the degree of light that will come from the new housing project could have an effect on the Perkins Observatory. Atty. Tom Hart says that they are coordinating closely with Ohio Wesleyan University along with a team of experts. They are working on an agreement as to how much light should radiate from the area. Tom Hart is the developers' representative on the proposed project.
Still, Councilwoman Lisa Keller is concerned that the lack of light from the would-be community could still be draw criminals in the area. While James Halter wonders if the University could easily respond to violations if such would occur once the community is there.
Since it is a concept-plan presentation the commission does not vote on the project. There are still a lot of concerns and deliberations that are yet to be tackled with regards to the redevelopment of the 9-hole golf club.
What od you think about the redevelopment of half of the Gold Club Golf course?
