Cheap and Easy Ways to Improve Security at Home

In this day and age, improving your security at home is a must, especially with the rise in cases of theft, break-in and burglary, but that doesn't mean you need to break the bank (no pun intended). Here are some cheap and easy ways of improving home security.

Changing your locks is probably one of the most important things you need to remember when you move into a new house and a new neighborhood, Realty Times reported. According to the publication, forgetting to do this important step will give access to a complete stranger (or the former owner) because they may have kept the spare key to your lock at home.

Realty Today has previously reported on new smart locks, which can help take home security to another level. At the 2016 CES, several smart locks were unveiled, including those locks, which can be controlled with the use of a smartphone. Now, users can lock and unlock with just a flick of their finger on their phones' screens.

Aside from changing the locks, homeowners may also choose to invest in upgrading their doors, as the aforementioned publication noted that most break-ins take place at the front, back or garage service door.

Setting up timers at home will also help give the illusion that someone is at home. These timers can help regulate when certain appliances or fixtures turn on and off.

"Modern digital light timers offer a key benefit over traditional models by having light cycles on and off randomly," said Bob Vila.

Security cameras are also becoming in demand, as the presence of a CCTV at home alone may be enough to deter an unwanted guest. However, some thieves may simply crush the cameras at the sight of them at home. Because of this, newer cameras, which are completely hidden from the naked eye, have been made available to homeowners. The publication noted that there are cameras that are sold for as low as $100.
