There's no stopping billionaire John Caudwell. The founder of mobile phone retailer Phones4U is not just successful in building his business empire. Now he is also set to build a massive home in London which is to be 15 times larger than an average UK home.
The billionaire is set to construct an enormous 14,300-square-foot mansion in London's Mayfair district. The construction approval he recently secured has triggered controversies as critics claim that it is not appropriate to build a very big home in the rich district. According to Bloomberg, the property is part of a project set to build 29 houses and apartments. Over half of the property will be underground, at a parking lot site on South Audley Street, so it won't be visible to the prying eyes.
Caudwell's new mansion will include a gym, business center, swimming pool, and cinema, according to LLNYC. The business tycoon, who has a net worth of £2 billion, has everything every man wishes for: two huge mansions, a helicopter, a yacht, and a collection of luxury cars. One of his homes previously belonged to Prince Jefri Bolkiah, the brother of the Sultan of Brunei.
"My favorite thing is to come down to London from my home in Staffordshire in the helicopter and then get my bike out of the back and cycle into London. It's wonderful," he said.
In 2014, Caudwell revealed his plan to build a mega mansion with a potential value of £250 million, Daily Mail says. The average new UK home measures about 85 square meters or just under 1,000 square feet, while Caudwell's property is 14,300 square feet. He sold Phones4U in 2006 for 1.46 billion pounds or approximately $2.2 billion. He was once UK's biggest tax payer.
