'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Trailer, Release Date & Cast: Shift in Team Characters Could Happen, Says James Gunn

Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" was a massive box office success during its release earlier this year.

The team of Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket are slated for a sequel and according to James Gunn, we could see a change in the lineup of characters in future films.

During a conversation with Cinema Blend Tuesday, Gunn revealed that it's possible changes will happen to the team of oddballs.

"Definitely. It's not a concrete roster where those five people will always be the Guardians of the Galaxy. Some of those people can leave and do other things; other characters can join in and be new additions. Definitely it will not stay the same - into the next movie," quoted the publication of the film director.

The site recalled the 44-year-old saying back in August, during the time of the movie's theater release, Gunn teased the possibility of another comic hero joining the Guardians team.

Similar to the "Avengers" series, the "Guardian of the Galaxy" comics produced by Marvel doesn't always have the same lineup.

Jobs & Hire noted that there are changes in the back stories of characters as plots and storylines develop and the director himself has confirmed such changes in the silver screen as well.

However, fans will have to continue speculating with regards to the nature of changes that will occur as Gunn didn't delve into much detail. The site however did analyze that "The most popular heroes, Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot may possibly be replaced by superhuman Adam Warlock, angel/hunter Angela Moondragon and more."

Another tidbit offered by Gunn was the fact that the villain Nebula will be having a larger role in the sequel. He revealed that Nebula, his personal favorite villain "will have a bigger exposure," said Jobs & Hire.

"I don't want Nova right now because I think [Peter] Quill being the only earthling is important," responded Gunn when asked about Nova aka Rick Rider.

Enstarz does point out that whichever character may get the boot is going to be pretty heavy for audiences who have grown attached to eac individual Guardian.

The franchise stars the following actors Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana. To date, no trailer has been released for the second installment.

Catch the sequel, "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" when it drops in theaters beginning May 5, 2017.
