Ryan Reynolds is reportedly very close to closing a deal with Fox Entertainment to star as Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool himself in the upcoming 2016 film, Entertainment Weekly reported.
The "Deadpool" film has been in development for years, and fans are awaiting news on if, or maybe when, Reynolds will fully be on board to join director Tim Miller and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick for the film, according to Deadline.
While fans anticipate the full and official confirmation of Reynolds as Wade, here are some of Reynolds' movies that will help prove just why he is perfect to play the one and only Deadpool.
1. "Blade: Trinity" (2004)
While Reynolds was not the superhero in the film, his role as Hannibal King was what urged him to work out and get physical at the start of his career.
After being cast in the film, Reynolds moved on from his frat boy and unhealthy lifestyle and worked out for three months, six days a week, according to Men's Fitness.
During the interview, Reynolds said that he really did not care about what he ate or drink, but thanks to "Blade: Trinity," was urged to start on a 3,200-calorie diet. The actor gained 25 pounds of muscle as a result. Because of this, more physical feats, such as running a marathon or hopefully climbing Machu Pichu, won't be impossible. The role definitely gave him the jumpstart he needed as he embarked on more physical roles.
2. "Adventureland" (2009)
Good looks don't make a movie so good acting chops are definitely needed.
Reynolds played the part of a handyman working at a theme park in the movie. His performance as a heartless and cheating husband was called "nuanced," giving life to the humorous script.
A review by Web Wombat also praised Reynolds' acting skills, complimenting his more subdued performance and saying it was one of the actor's "most grounded and interesting" roles.
3. "Buried" (2010)
Another stellar film showcasing Reynold's skills is "Buried," set in Iraq and starring the actor as a humanitarian aid worker buried alive by Iraqi insurgents.
With part of the film has Reynolds stuck in a box, there is the potential to have a boring, threadbare film, according to Movie Moron. However, his acting prowess managed to keep people in their seats, showing that he was more than his good looks and had the acting skills to match.
4. "Green Lantern" (2011)
While critics may have "loathed" the movie, according to Cinema Blend, Reynold's first superhero film still deserves a mention, as the experiences he had with the film helped him get more perspective on what it's like to play a superhero.
During an interview with Empire, Reynolds admitted he had little interest to resume the mantle of Hal Jordan a.k.a. The Green Lantern. He said he had difficulty making it and was confused.
Reynolds wasn't too quick to jump on superhero films after that, as he said in the interview, "If you're going to do comic book movies in that vein, you really have to get them right."
Hopefully Reynolds is going to get it right this time with "Deadpool."
5. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (2009)
Of course, the most obvious choice is the movie and the role that started it all.
Reynolds first made a brief appearance as Wade alongside Hugh Jackman who stars as the titular character Wolverine, according to Deadline. In the film, Wade willingly participated in military experiments that were attempting to replicate Wolverine's healing capability so he could get help getting rid of his cancer.
Despite his rather somber back story, Reynolds played off Wade, "The Merc with a Mouth," as a smart-mouthed, acerbic and quick witted individual with a wise-cracking attitude, according to Deadline. It was a performance that nabbed him a reprising or better yet a starring role in his own "X-Men" film.
Fox Entertainment's "Deadpool" film is slated for a February 2016 release, and here's hoping Reynolds will be putting on the mask once more.
