The Most Stunning Fortresses in the World

A fortress is a fortified place against an enemy's attack. It is a safe refuge for armies and militaries. Here are some of the most incredible fortresses around the world:

Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort is India's largest fortress sitting atop a 590-foot hill. It spreads in an area of 700 acres in the Berach River and is the administrative headquarters of Chittorgarh District. Belonging to the southern part of Rajasthan, the district houses numbers of fortresses and towers built during the Maurya Empire in the 7th century. It is the biggest among all Rajput forts.

Known as the Fort of Chittor, it has a one-mile road that leads to the seven gateways. Originally, it has 84 bodies of water, and only 22 remain today. It is still capable of holding one billion gallons of water to sustain an army of 50,000 without fear of getting thirsty for a period of four years. The bodies of water include talabs (ponds), kunds (wells), and baories (stepwells), Chittogarh reports.

Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is one of the most stunning fortresses across the world as it is hailed the biggest and the oldest still-inhabited castle to date. It has been home to the British family for a thousand years. It is now the official home of Queen Elizabeth II, according to Yahoo Estate. Up to this date, the castle is being used as a venue for state and ceremonial occasions. It is also the place where the Queen invites important personalities such as presidents and monarchs from other countries. William the Conqueror built the castle in 1070 to protect the western approach to London.

Cheyenne Mountain Complex

Cheyenne Mountain Complex located in Colorado is the home of North American Aerospace Command (NORAD). It is one of the icons of the Cold War. The complex examines the skies for presence of Russian missiles and the military command and control center of the United States in case of World War III. Closed for 10 years, the complex was opened once again in April of 2015. It will be the base for high-tech tracking and communications equipment in the United States military, Daily Mail reports.
