For off-grid travelers looking for a different kind of adventure, the Frying Pan Tower off the coast of North Carolina is the best place to go. The former lighthouse is located 32 miles south of Bald Head Island and offers a unique experience to guests with its surrounding ocean views and "out of sight of land" location.
According to Architectural Digest, Frying Pan Tower could be the "most dangerous hotel in the world" as it stands 85 feet above the Atlantic Ocean. Going to the extraordinary hotel is no easy feat, as guests have to sail there in their own boat, ride a helicopter, or be picked up by Frying Pan Tower's schooner, which is by far the most convenient option.
According to the hotel's official website, Frying Pan Tower is close to the Gulf Stream, so the place is warm even when it's cold onshore. If it's too hot on the beach, the weather is mild in the tower, which makes it an ideal place to literally hide away for adventurous travelers.
However, the rooms in Frying Pan Tower don't come cheap. A two-night stay here costs $598, but the hotel's panoramic Atlantic ocean views are reportedly worth the price. The hotel's website also offers a weekend gift certificate for the entire 2016 for the same price of $598 per person.
According to CNN, Frying Pan Tower offers solitude like no other. The "unique ocean hotel" offers eight rooms that face the ocean. Five of these rooms are equipped with twin beds, and the other three have queen-size beds perfect for big groups.
Here, the guests are the ones to cook their meals and bring ingredients, although basic supplies are provided in the hotel. Those who can't rough it out, however, can request for a chef when making reservations. Besides enjoying serene beach views and frolicking in the water, Frying Pan Tower guests can also enjoy fishing in the nearby Gulf Stream, which is a short ride from the tower.
