'Concrete Mushroom' Be Gone! Robots to Take Down 87-Meter Sydney Harbour Control Tower

Robots will finally remove the Sydney Harbour Control Tower from the Sydney Skyline.

Back in July 2015, according to The Sydney Morning Herald, there reportedly were two opposing sides on the issue of Sydney Harbour Control Tower. As the National Trust fought to save the tower from getting knocked down, there was a suggestion that the odd and funny structure could become a bungee -jumping "adventure tower" in the heart of Australia's largest city. However, the state government eventually granted approval for the demolition Sydney Harbour Control Tower at Barangaroo.

The Tower had been called many names by people including, "concrete mushroom," "the Pill," a "hypodermic in God's bum" but majority agree that it simply is an eyesore. Standing 87 meters high, it has been a Barangaroo landmark since 1974. It was built to control the docking of vessels in the wharves until 2011 after vessel control services were transferred to Port Botany. So now the state government agrees that the structure has to go.

According to Commercial Real Estate, robots will do the job of erasing the tower from the Sydney skyline. Instead of the more traditional dynamites or wrecking balls, the remote controlled robots will chomp down the structure. The Barangaroo Delivery Authority which purchased the tower in 2012 a year after it closed wanted to demolish the tower to render a better looking headland park. However, its plan faced opposition from Heritage advocates until the government sealed the tower's fate.

Barangaroo Reserve project director Peter Funder explained why the tower had to be destroyed, saying, "We didn't just decide to knock it down straight away. What was evident was that the structure was built for one purpose and one purpose only and that was to be a harbor control tower and any adaptive reuse was just not possible."
