Gilles Belley Designs New Modular Furniture System for Small Spaces

Many homeowners these days live in spatially-challenged living arrangements- either in condominiums or apartments, because of that, space-saving furniture are a trend.

Parisian designer Gilles Belley wanted to address the needs of city living. When he was granted with a funding by VIA, which is a French organization that helps in promoting local design, he immediately proceeded with his furniture collection which he calls “Rooms.”

The collection is comprised of "Area," "Wall" and "Block." Each of the furniture is designed to provide more flexibility and it also aims to fit different spaces especially that most city dwellers are transferring from one space to another. With that, Belley designed free-standing furniture that is adaptable and moveable.

Said collection provides easy-to-implement design solutions for common problems in small areas like how a temporary room divider can also be used as a wall instead of building an actual wall. The "Wall" also comes with a built-in desk and reconfigurable shelves.

The "Block" has two different features as it has a staircase-ladder on one side and a writing desk on the other side. It can be a supporting structure for a narrow bed creating a loft in your home.

The "Area" is a "room within a room" that has shelves around it and could be a private space when you need to be away from a larger crowd.

“The idea is to condense the scale of furnishing to incorporate modes of function that overlap from one room to several rooms—putting living space into the furniture,” Belley said according to 6sqft.

Belley’s "Rooms" will be one of the major highlights of VIADESIGN 2016, which is an annual event where new design discoveries in the field of French furniture design are showcased. The VIADESIGN 2016 exhibit opened at Galerie VIA in Paris, France on Jan. 15 and will run until March 4 this year, UK-based website Blouinart reported.
