Home Composting Tips

Composting is a healthy habit that can help our soil to become nourished with vitamins and nutrients. This is mostly done by farmers to keep their land and crops growing healthily.

According to Ecochem, "Composting is a natural biological process, carried out under controlled aerobic conditions (requires oxygen). In this process, various microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, break down organic matter into simpler substances."

Although not all homemakers are accustomed with this type of "natural biological process," this can be done at home in simple and easy ways. There are elements that could help the composting process quicker. The elements needed are "carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and moisture."

Real Simple shares ideas on how anyone can compost at home with these tips.

What are the foods that can be composed?

According to the outlet, the things that can be compost are mostly dried materials like "Fruit peels, coffee grounds (and paper filters), eggshells, leftover vegetables." And if you're used to having leftover meats of different kinds from your cooked stew or braised meals, these cannot be included in the container because they could "attract animals."

How to do this?

In order to compost in your home, you need to prepare an 80 gallon depth of container. This container is ideally placed in a "shaded" area. Apart from this, this container must be covered and secured from stray animals.

Put your waste on the bin and it must be a little bit "damp" and not submerged in the water. It usually takes "four to six months" after you will notice that this waste will turn into a healthy soil. The end product of this compost is a black colored, dark soil. This soil is good if scattered in your garden area where you grow most of your fruit plants and vegetables.
