‘Star Wars 7' Release Date, Cast & Trailer: Characters Revealed via Collectable Cards

After the excitement brought by the release of the first trailer of "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" at the end of November, fans have more reason to be excited as the name of the characters in the film have finally been revealed, The Independent reported.

J.J. Abrams, the film's co-writer and director, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy have revealed to Entertainment Weekly the names of several characters by mocking up collectable cards reminiscent of ones which came out after the original "Star Wars" film.

In 1997, Topps trading card company used the catchphrase "Collect 'Em, Trade 'Em" to release different collectible cards, including ones that featured characters from the first "Star Wars" movie.

During that time, Topps released five rounds of cards designated by the colors blue and red. What Abrams and Kennedy has done now, was a mock-up of the collectible cards -- three from the red series and five from the blue.

Although "Star Wars" veterans, including Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, or Carrie Fisher are not yet included in the collectibles, it did include the characters played by Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac, as well as the figure in the snow with the crossguard lightsaber.

Additionally, it was revealed that the "ball droid" robot has an alphanumeric name of BB-8.

Included in the cards were captions about what the respective character is thinking, such as one caption saying "Finn on the run!" written on the image of John Boyega panting and sweating.

There is also an image of a tense looking Oscar Isaac piloting a starfighter with the caption: "Poe Dameron in his X-Wing."

The collectible cards revealed that the shadowy figure with the red lightsaber is Kylo Ren. According to the Daily Mail, red lightsabers are used by Sith, usually denoting an allegiance to the dark side.

The image, taken from the trailer, shows Kylo Ren igniting his lightsaber, while Andy Serkis' voice spoke about the Force's dark side.

Also, Daisy Ridley's character has been introduced and is named "Rey," although her last name has not been provided.

Other cards include images of a group of stormtroopers and the Millenium Falcon.

However, since the movie is still about a year away, the filmmakers are holding back on giving too much information about the film.

"I'm only sorry we couldn't give everyone a stick of gum," Abrams told EW.

"Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" will hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.
