Korea's 'Hotel of Doom' Dubbed Tallest Building in the World

Here's a look at the tallest building in the world that can be found in North Korea.

According to Elle Décor, the building has been dubbed as "Hotel of Doom" after it was abandoned several years ago. Back in 1987, workers began constructing the building specifically found in Pyongyang, North Korea. Two years later, the building's frame was completed. Although two years later than its expected completion, the building became one of the most primed buildings in the country.

"The 105-story, 1,083-foot structure protrudes above the rest of the North Korean capital's skyline. It remains the largest abandoned building in the world," the publication noted.

Meanwhile, a few years later, then-ruler Kim Il-Sung said that he wanted to transform the building into a hotel to help boost tourism in the country. However, "Hotel of Doom" didn't prove to be a success. Luckily, an Egyptian company called Orascom worked closely on transforming Ryugyong Hotel back in 2008.

"But construction on the luxury hotel seems to have halted again. Recent reports have said the inside of the structure has not plumbing, electricity or, really anything at all. The gigantic building that looks like a winged spaceship from the outside serves to shroud a hollow interior," the site stated.

In other news, according to The Daily Beast, the construction of the hotel is expected to require a huge sum of money. Luckily, there's one guy who might be interested in funding the whole thing. The publication claimed that Kim Jong-un's, Il-Sung's grandson wants to pay for the construction using his own money.

Back in 2009, there was an estimate that revealed Ryugyong reconstruction project would cost around $2 billion. This amount is estimated at roughly around seven percent of North Korea's GDP. With this, Jong-un is beleived to be open to spending a total of $5 million out of his own pocket for the project.
