A small garage was recently transformed into a fully furnished house in Seattle.
According to the New York Times, Michelle de la Vega transformed her shabby garage into a 250-square-foot home that has everything that she needs on a daily basis. What makes her transformation interesting is the fact that de la Vega only spent a total of $32,000 for all of her renovations.
According to Elle Décor, "The space now includes a sleeping loft, a bathroom, a wood-burning stove, as well as furniture pieces that were either custom-built or salvaged, refurbished, and repurposed by de la Vega herself."
In an interview with The New York Times, the visual and performance artist revealed that she created her "Dream House" as a tribute to her father. Growing up, her father suffered from a serious illness that caused them to lose huge sums of money.
"The meaning of having a house - or not having one - is significant in the family," she said.
Meanwhile, the 40-year-old artist revealed that she bought the shabby garage several years ago from a divorce settlement amounting to $208,000.
"At that time, I was coming out of the ashes and I knew I needed to come up with a good survival strategy for starting over as a single person," she said. "I was somewhat out of mind, but it's also fantastic. I was hiring, firing and contending with men and their power tools for a good nine months," she added.
De la Vega's house boasts a sleeping loft, bathroom, wood burning stove and more. As a conclusion, she said, "The garage and the elements in it are all defunct, unwanted things that were reclaimed and given new life. Given where I was coming from, building it was a deeply redemptive experience."
