Even as Apple struggles to cope with the demand for the newly released iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, people are already anxious to know what's next for the popular smartphone. According to reports, Samsung has already begun manufacturing the new A9 processor to be used in the upcoming iPhone, dubbed as the iPhone 6S or iPhone 7.
Forbes reports that the new A9 chips, Apple's most powerful processor yet, is already rolling off Samsung's factory lines. The site added that "The chips will be used in the next-generation iPhone smartphones from Apple, potentially exploiting Samsung's 14nm technology."
Tech Times recalled an earlier statement by president and general manager of the semiconductor business of Samsung, Dr. Kinam Kim, who explained that this new contract to supply chipsets from its 14nm line would enable the firm to improve its profits.
Samsung has found itself in a steady earnings decline. It's being reported by the Cult of Mac that the South Korean firm's operating profit is down by as low as 60% from the same period a year ago.
Samsung claims that the A9, when compared to older models, will enable the iPhone to work faster and last longer as the battery will work more efficiently. Samsung, who won the bid to manufacture the chips is believed to have started production in its Austin plant.
"It is said to be using 14-nanometre FinFET technology for the chips, which are said to use 35 per cent less power to run, while having 20 per cent more processing power. They are also 15 per cent smaller than 20nm chips - ideal for smartphone or tablet manufacturers that need more room in the case for larger batteries, etc.," shared Pocket Lint.
As it stands, Apple's newest model, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, both use TSMC's 64-bit A8 system-on-a-chip that is produced using a 20nm process. Dropping from 20nm to 14nm will enable the device to perform better while reducing its power consumption.
Many believe that the next iPhone will follow Apple's usual release schedule, during the month of September. However, there are reports that 2015 will see another multiple iPhone release, one during Spring 2015, to accompany the iWatch, and the other during it's usual Fall timeslot.
