Robert Griffin III will start for the Washington Redskins again on Saturday against the New York Giants after Colt McCoy aggravated his neck injury in their 24-13 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday.
Redskins coach Jay Gruden announced his decision on Monday, saying that Griffin earned the starting spot again following his impressive performance against the Giants when he substituted for McCoy.
"This is Robert's team right now," Gruden said via ESPN. "From there, we'll take it one game at a time and make our judgments and conclusions after that."
Griffin completed 18 of 27 passes for 236 yards with one touchdown against the Giants. Despite absorbing their sixth straight defeat, Gruden had nothing but praises for Griffin for providing the much-needed energy when he relieved McCoy in the opening quarter of the match.
"Robert competed in the first half -- did some good things," Gruden said. "I thought he played with good energy. I thought he took the ball down and ran it when he had to a few times, and was pretty efficient in the passing game."
Gruden's decision to start Griffin on Saturday marked the fifth time Washington made a quarterback change this season.
Griffin started in their first two games, but the 24-year-old quarterback sustained a dislocated left ankle. Kirk Cousins in the next five games, but lost his spot to McCoy after failing to reach expectation. Griffin started again when he returned from the injury, but was replaced by McCoy after just three games.
"It's not what you want," Gruden said of their quarterback situation. "You want somebody to take the position and play and have success, obviously. I have nothing against all three. I think all three quarterbacks have a good future. I just want somebody to take the position and run with it, and hopefully we'll see something like that this week with Robert."
