The happiest employees were generally located in Washington D.C., Salt Lake City or San Diego. These were three of the best places to work in according to the survey.

The most content workers of all were in the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California metropolitan area. With an index score of 3.93, people in San Jose said they were more than satisfied with the people they worked with and their daily tasks, according to a report from Forbes.

The happiest employees' mindset was based on a multitude of factors, according to Matt Miller, chief technology officer and co-founder of CareerBliss. He stated that it was clear that employees did not need only positive and rewarding work cultures, but also opportunities to grow within their company and their city.

This list of the happiest and unhappiest areas to work in, compiled by CareerBliss, was based on a survey of more than 20,000 independent employees from 2013.

Employees all over the nation were asked to evaluate ten points that affect general workplace happiness. These included relationship with the boss and co-workers, overall work environment, job resources, amount of compensation, growth opportunities, general company culture, company reputation, daily tasks, and control over the jobs done on a daily basis, according to a feature from Popsugar.

Employees evaluated each key point on a scale and also indicated how significant it was to their general happiness. The numbers were computed to find an overall rating of employee happiness for every respondent, and then they were categorized by geographic location to find the happiest and unhappiest areas for employees.

The happiest employees cannot be found in Cincinnati, Pittsburgh or Fort Lauderdale. These three cities were reportedly where some of the country's unhappiest employees worked. Most people were not surprised that most of the unhappiest areas had frigid winters and sweltering summers. Untimely snowstorms and dreaded heat waves will affect general happiness, but so will income, workplace environment, and career opportunities or lack thereof.
