Earlier this month we learned that Roberto Orci will not be directing upcoming film, "Star Trek 3" and Badass Digest is claiming that the reason is due to the direction Paramount is looking to take.
Orci has been instrumental in the production of the two earlier films and was very vocal early on about his plans for the third film.
BAD reported that "Paramount's notes on his script were untenable and the other was that Paramount shut the picture down a month ago and spent the time talking to other filmmakers before officially taking Orci off the project."
While the first two movies of the series were solid box office earners, the pair were unable to produce stellar returns at the scale reached by other films, specifically, "Guardians of the Galaxy."
Below is what Devin Faraci from Badass Digest revealed:
"Guardians of the Galaxy. That's the movie that has a bug up Paramount's ass, and they want Star Trek 3 to feel more like Guardians. This comes on the heels of the first two movies being respectable, solid earners but not the kind of home runs Paramount needs. They want the third film to be huge, and they want it to be huge overseas especially. They look at Rocket and Groot and then they look at Keenser and they wonder why he doesn't have more of a role."
According to Deadline, while Orci remains a producer for the project, Paramount Pictures is choosing from five directors, namely, Rupert Wyatt, Morten Tyldum, Daniel Espinosa, Justin Lin, and Duncan Jones.
Of these five directors, Deadline puts forth that Wyatt is the top pick. With the recent partnership between Paramount and Wyatt in "The Gambler" along with his experience in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," Wyatt definitely knows what is needed to make a geek-film a roaring success.
"Star Trek 3" would have been the directorial debut of Orci. His talents and partnership with writer Alex Kurtzman have led to major film projects including some of Hollywood's most notable films like "Mission: Impossible III" and the Transformers series, recalled The Rolling Stone.
The crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise played actors Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, and John Cho are expected to appear in the sequel.
To date, no plot details, trailers or official release date has been revealed. The film is rumored to be gearing up for a 2016 launch in order to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise.
