Celebrity Real Estate: Billionaire Michael Bloomberg Steps Closer to Building UES Mega Mansion

Former New York City mayor and billionaire Michael Bloomberg is now only a step away from building his dream mega mansion in the Upper East Side. According to New York Curbed, Bloomberg has been casually buying the units at 19 East 79th Street, the Beaux Arts townhouse which sits next to his current 17 East 79th Street residence. The five-story building has now a total of six units, and Bloomberg owns five of them. It was reported that he was able to purchase unit 3 for $14 million, and this leaves him one unit left in order to begin his dream mansion.

According to the Observer, his quest in buying the units dates back to 1989 when he began to purchase the first floor. In 2000 he bought the 2,000-square-foot second floor for $1.2 million. After that, he was able to obtain 12,500 square feet of space in his home.

Back in 2013, he was able to do renovations on the mansion just as he was about to leave his office after three consecutive terms. This is only one of the properties that the billionaire owns as he also has a new $25 million London Townhouse to look after as well as his properties in Hamptons, Bermuda, Colorado and Florida.

Lucky for Bloomberg, his plans were quickly approved when he submitted it to the city, unlike Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich whose permit was denied. He submitted a $6 million plan to combine three townhouses on 75th Street into one enormous single-family mansion. However, it seems like he is not ready to give up yet on his plans.

No one knows if Bloomberg will be satisfied with his recent purchase and will start with the overhauling of the property. The top floor is currently owned by Jeffrey Wood and Pamela Jenrette, and it seems like the couple is nowhere near leaving the floor just yet.
