How to Prepare Your Home for Disaster

Disaster knows no time or place; it can strike anytime whether you are at home, in the office, inside your car or at the grocery. While no one can predict what disaster will strike your area in the next days, weeks, months or years, it is always a good thing keeping yourself prepared in case a disaster happens.

According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), there are 3,455 floods, 2,689 storms, 470 droughts and 395 cases of extreme temps across the globe. These figures do not include the prevalence of other phenomena such as earthquakes.

While other areas may be more prone to experiencing a disaster such as floods or earthquakes, no area is exempted from experiencing one. A disaster can take place at any time and prevention is always better than cure.

As reported on Trulia, there are several ways to prepare yourself and your home from any future disasters. Homeowners are advised to prepare an emergency preparedness kit and keep one at home, inside the car, and in the office.

Ideally, an emergency kit includes a three-day supply of food and water, including utensils needed for these things such as can opener and clean spoon and fork. A three-day supply of health and medical supplies are also included in the kit.

You may also need to include some safety items such as a whistle in case you get trapped or a flashlight in case the power supply needs to be cut off. It is also important to keep a number of emergency contacts within the kit.

To prepare your home for a disaster, the publication recommends on keeping anything secure and firmly bolted in place. Mirrors, pictures and paintings should be firmly anchored to walls and they should not be placed anywhere near beds.

Trees must also be secured or tied in place in order to protect your home from any further damages once the wind passes through your house. Curtains and blinds should also be closed during the night to protect your home from any flying object.
