It's Week 16 and the San Diego Chargers (8-6) are set to face off against the San Francisco 49ers (7-7) on Dec. 20 at Levin's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, NFL reported.
The Chargers suffered a 22-10 defeat against the Denver Broncos on Sunday's game. Overall, the team will need to win their last two games and will have to depend on the league's teams' status if they want to take a spot as an AFC Wild Card, according to SB Nation.
However, the Chargers' ground attack in the league is ranked at No. 31, which is a plus for them, and they could possibly bank on the 49ers' weakened interior defense to hopefully nab a win.
One thing that is not helping the team's prospects at all though, is that they have a long list of injured players, according to Fox Sports.
Receiver Keenan Allen and running back Ryan Matthews are both unlikely to play, due to a broken right collarbone and right ankle sprain for Allen and a severely sprained ankle for Matthews. Second-leading tackler Donald Butler has a dislocated elbow while punter Mike Scifres has a broken collarbone.
Quarterback Philip Rivers also reportedly hurt his chest and back, but is still said to be playing. Same goes for Ladarius Green who came back after suffering a concussion and ankle injury.
The playoff hopes of the 49ers were dashed when they lost 15 against the Seattle Seahawks at Week 15 with a score of 17-7, according to Bleacher Report. There was also the Detroit Lions' 16-14 win in a match against the Minnesota Vikings that yielded the numbers that mathematically took the 49ers out of the game.
Not only that, but the team is also facing a number of missing players with running back Carlos Hyde suffering an ankle injury, running back Frank Gore and tackle Anthony Davis sustaining concussions, linebacker Ahmad Brooks with a dislocated thumb and Chris Borland with an ankle injury, according to Fox Sports.
Defensive lineman Ray McDonald is also currently embroiled in a scandal after being investigated for sexual assault, Fox Sports added.
For now though, sports fans and viewers will have to wait to see whether the 49ers beat the odds for a win or the Chargers manage to nab a playoff spot.
The game can be viewed on television on CBS at 8:25 p.m. ET or fans can check out the live stream on Pro NFL or Game Pass.
