Miguel Cotto is open to facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a rematch if negotiations for the proposed fight against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in May next year go down.
Cotto is being linked to a fight against Alvarez on Cinco de Mayo weekend on May 2 next year, but the Puerto Rican's legal adviser Gaby Peñagarícano reiterated that no agreement has been reached for the Canelo fight.
Peñagarícano denied that the Cotto vs Canelo showdown is not set in stone, saying that they are actually considering several options, including a rematch against Mayweather in May.
"The reality is that there is no agreement yet. None. For any fight," Peñagarícano told BoxingScene. "We are in talks, but an announcement that we reached an agreement for that fight [with Canelo] - it is not true. And a fight with Mayweather has certainly not been ruled out."
Cotto, the reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion, took a lopsided unanimous decision loss to Mayweather in May 2012.
Mayweather has yet to pick his next opponent, but the reigning pound-for-pound king recently expressed interest in facing Manny Pacquiao. If the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight happens, Cotto will have to move his next fight or look for a trainer because Freddie Roach is expected to focus on training Pacquiao.
Peñagarícano said that they are looking at that possible hurdle, but he said that the fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao remains unlikely at this point because both camps are expected to make several demands.
"That is a factor, but the fight of Pacquiao and Mayweather does not see real at all," Peñagarícano said. "In short, there is still no agreement for a fight between Cotto and Canelo. If there will be or won't be, we will know later on. The talks remain in progress."
Cotto, who is coming off an impressive victory against Sergio Martinez in June, also said in a recent interview that talks about his fight against Alvarez are all speculations at this point.
"Everything that has been said regarding a fight against Canelo has been pure speculation," said Cotto, who holds a 39-4 record with 32 knockouts. "So far there is absolutely nothing. Everything is uncertain, up in the air, so nothing is clear. There is still some way to go."
