'Minions' Movie Release Date, Trailer & Plot: 5 Things About 'Despicable Me' Spinoff Film

Gru's favorite yellow mini-helpers are soon coming back on screen, and this time they take the center stage. "Minions" from Illumination films would chronicle the lives of Gru's tiny helpers before they came to his employ.

The spin-off to the famous "Despicable Me" movie where we first met the banana-loving creatures, will focus on the history of the minions. According to International Business Times, viewers would finally get a glimpse into the past of the minions and how they came to existence. It would also touch on their culture and the minion definition and love for "banana."

Comicbook described the minions as very old organisms. It seems that the first ones were older than dinosaurs and originated from single-celled organisms. They evolved through time while they serve the most loathsome masters.

However, due to their clumsy and accident-prone nature, they killed off all their former bosses. The sad reality has affected the minions and left them feeling lonely. However, Kevin decided to find a new master to serve and alongside Stuart and Bob, they travelled all over the world in search of a new lord.

Their journey brought them to different countries as they look for Scarlet Overkill, a potential master and the world's first female super-villain.

"Minions" would take viewers back in time and see how they directly affected the world's greatest events in history. The movie follows the three on their adventure to find Scarlet while also saving their fellow minions from being wiped out.

Aside from their history, the movie would give fans an idea on how minions are emotionally wired. It would reveal that the world's favorite yellow klutzes also suffer from depression. Well, they did, after having lost so many masters already. They recover from the loneliness after Kevin shared his brilliant plan to find another master to serve.

The movie takes place before the minions met Gru, their latest master. Set in New York City in 1968, fans could expect a lot of MOD-themed allusions.

The movie's star-studded voice actors feature Academy Award-winner Sandra Bullock as Scarlet Overill, Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan and Allison Janney, noted The Hollywod Reporter.

Steve Carell, who was the voice behind Gru in the two "Despicable Me" films would also join the cast. "Minions" was supposed to come out on Christmas 2014 but movie distributor Universal Pictures decided to push back the premier to July 10, 2015. The Hollywood Reporter, in a separate report, said that it may be due to the company avoiding the many other animated films scheduled to hit theaters on the same time.
