'Downton Abbey' Season 5 Spoilers: 3 Plot Details to Keep in Mind

The British award-winning TV series "Downton Abbey" continues to keep its American fans wanting more as its makers reveal key plot twists to watch out for as it returns to PBS on Sunday.

According to USA Today, the series' fifth season continues with twists in the fate of three of its female characters who were left at peculiar situations at the end of Season 4.

The British television show was first aired in the United Kingdom and Ireland in September 2010 and was later included in PBS' "Masterpiece Classic anthology" in January 2011.

The popular drama, set in a fictional Yorkshire county estate known as Downton Abbey in a post-Edwardian era, portrays the lives of the Crawley family and their servants as they struggle through the 20th century's greatest historical events.

The series began in an episode related to the sinking of the RMS Titanic and continued through the First World War, the Spanish influenza outbreak to the United Kingdom general election of 1923, a report from the New York Times stated.

The cast, says the USA Today report, were "basking in the sun at the beach, toes in the water, gaze on the horizon" during the series' exit to its latest season.

A massive change in the fictional society had been sparked after the "Downton Abbey" women began seeking higher levels of employment with Lady Edith Crawley beginning to rebel.

According to series creator Julian Fellowes, "the pace of change is gathering momentum" as the Labor Party's first prime minister takes office after being elected in 1924.

Here are three things fans should expect from "Downton Abbey" on its fifth season:

  • EDITH. According to the drama's creator, Lady Edith Crawley's determination to reunite with her baby and bring her home would be the season's "kickoff point." In the show's fifth season, Edith would be secretly spending time with her daughter who had been living a low-profile life in Downton Abbey, says Fellowes.
  • MARY. Meanwhile, Lady Mary, who is portrayed by Michelle Dockery, is ready to mingle after being widowed, says Fellowes. In the end of the fourth season, Mary was wooed by both Lord Tony Gillingham and Charles Blake. In the fifth leg of the series, however, she decides to sleep with Lord Gillingham.
  • SARAH. One of the Crawley's friends, Sarah Bunting, is also in for an interesting experience in season 5 as she continues to test Lady Sybil's widower Tom Branson.
