Jamie Dornan, the star of the upcoming erotic romance "Fifty Shades of Grey," responds to claims that the film is misogynistic. The 32-year-old actor, who stars opposite Dakota Johnson told Elle UK, that BDSM scenes aren't anti-feminist.
"The love story is more important than the BDSM aspect. I mean, we are going to tell a love story, you know, it can't just be what happens in the Red Room, that's not a film. There's so much more going on than that," said the actor playing the role of sado-masochistic billionaire Christian Grey.
The admitted that he learned that the world of BDSM was much larger than he initially thought.
He added: "I can understand why people say tying a woman up and spanking her is misogynistic. But actually, more men are submissives than women. Very powerful men. It's a far bigger scene than I imagined: in pretty much any city in the world that you could name, people want to get spanked with a paddle with studs on it."
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the North Ireland native also revealed in the interview that in order to prepare for the role, he conducted research by visiting sex clubs and dungeons.
Aside from talking about the film, Dornan also discussed his experiences as a newbie in the Hollywood A-List.
"You don't do it to have some guy sitting in a f**king bush outside your house with a camera. That's not why you do it," he said. "I just couldn't do an office job; I don't have that temperament," said the actor candidly, quoted THR.
"But yeah, I don't know how you can prepare for it. You can't get in sandbags. Buy loads of hoodies and caps? I'll deal with it when it comes. I feel pretty secure about who I am. It's not my first time at the rodeo," he concluded.
Prior to hitting it big with his upcoming film, Dornan used to be a model for Calvin Klein and starred in BBC Two crime drama series "The Fall." The star is set to appear in film "The Seige of Jadotville" to begin filming this year.
The film, due out in time for Valentine's Day 2015 is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. "Fifty Shades of Grey" is based on E.L. James' best selling erotic trilogy of the same name.
