There are many changes happening for the "Ghostbusters" reboot planned for release in 2016. Aside from an all-female cast, the film's scene will take place in the present time rather than in 1984 and will be scarier than the first two films.
According to Paul Feig, via Empire Online, while there are many changes, the director does confirm that the film will shoot and be set in New York City. Feig also adds that there will be references to the original series ensuring connectivity.
"To me it's such a New York movie and the biggest sin would be to pull it out of there. I just love New York and, selfishly, I just want to shoot in New York," said the director.
However, the "Bridesmaid" director added that while there will be references to the original series ensuring connectivity, don't count on flat out imitations.
Feig added: "We're not recreating the old movie, but we want to do just enough fun nods that the fans will go, 'Oh, okay, they're acknowledging that the other movie existed.' I like to watch parodies, but I don't want to do them, because they're too referential. Comedy that's too referential has such a short shelf life whereas comedy that's based around characters will be relatable 2000 years from now, because people won't change that much."
With all the questions and criticism swirling about the storyline changes and casting, Feig defends the decision to push through with the reboot.
"A lot of people ask why I didn't create my own thing, but Ghostbusters never ran out of steam, it's such a great idea, It's such a fun franchise so why not bring it to a new generation?" explained Feig.
"The old movie is never going to not exist. It's not my plan to erase every copy! Hopefully they can all live together," furthered the director.
The casting for the film has yet to be confirmed but Movie Web shares that as rumored cast members include heavy hitters like Melissa McCarthy, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence and Rebel Wilson.
Without an official plot summary or trailer, we'll have t wait and see what other news will be shared.
Catch "Ghostbusters," the third film, when it hits theaters sometime in 2016.
