'Samsung Galaxy S6' Release Date, Specs & Price: Samsung Will Copy Apple's Touch ID? [Rumors]

As Samsung continues to develop the Galaxy S6 due out in 2015, reports indicate that its fingerprint sensor will be patterned after Apple's more successful Touch ID technology.

SamMobile reports that in place of the swipe-based sensor, the new smartphone will ship with a Touch ID-like feature being used in the newer models of the iPhone and iPad.

The site writes, "the sensor will work in the same manner as on the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 and the iPhone 5S / 6 / 6 Plus, sources confirm. Which means you will be able to enroll an entire fingerprint, unlike the swipe-based sensor, which only partially registered a fingerprint."

Samsung scanners require users to swipe their fingers over the reader, as opposed to Apple's easy-to-use touch-technology where users only need to place their fingerprint over the home key that's embedded with a fingerprint scanner.

In order to make the system more responsive, the site further notes that the sensor will be built into the home button, same as before, but the size of the button will be enlarged for a much more responsive experience.

With the new type of touch-sensor, Samsung users will only touch their print to the button and no longer have to swipe the finger on the sensor. Per SamMobile, at the very least, Samsung will retain its key features including the following features:

  • Fingerprint Unlock: Verifies the user's identity and unlocks the device.
  • Web sign-in: Allows users to sign into websites using fingerprints.
  • Verify Samsung Account: Verifies the user's identity when purchasing content in Samsung services.
  • Private Mode: It's not specifically a fingerprint-exclusive feature, but allows user to choose fingerprint as an unlock method.
  • Pay with PayPal: Allows users to make quick and secure payments via their PayPal account using their registered fingerprints.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is expected to make its debut this March during the annual Mobile World Congress set to take place in Barcelona.

Gigaom writes that this improved ID system could aid Samsung's aims to offer more reliable and secure mobile payment systems.
Part of the reason why Apple Pay is more successful than Samsung's is because its Touch ID system is more consistent.

Samsung has yet to make an official statement on the status, launch date, specs or price of the Galaxy S6.
