'King Kong: Skull Island' Release Date, Trailer & News: No Empire State Building, Film Based in Detroit?

Actor J.K. Simmons recently provided some major details regarding new film "King Kong: Skull Island."

At the red carpet during the Golden Globes, the "Whiplash" actor revealed to MTV the film timeline as well as setting.

"When it first came to my attention, 'There's interest in you for a new King Kong,' I thought, 'Okay, why? But I met with Jordan Vogt-Roberts who's going to be directing it, and John Gatins who's gonna be writing, and Tom [Hiddleston]-Jordan was just so passionate and so smart and there's such an interesting new take on it, and it's set in Detroit in 1971 which is where I grew up, and we're gonna shoot in Detroit during baseball season and I'll be able to go to Tigers games, so there's a lot to like about this movie."

However, according to MLive.com, the news was just that, news to the Michigan Film Office who revealed that to date, no application for the project has been received.

"We have not received an application or heard from the project at this time about a Michigan shoot," said an email from film office's Michelle Grinnell on Thursday afternoon.

With regards to what the movie has in store, ComingSoon.net shares of the film's unofficial summary:

"KONG: SKULL ISLAND will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary's story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline."

"King Kong" is a classic film that was first introduced to audiences in 1933. It has since been followed by a series of other reboots including a 1976 remake and a 2005 Peter Jackson interpretation, recalled The Telegraph.

Prior to the release of "Skull Island," a Netflix-led new animated TV series, "Kong: King of the Apes" is set to debut sometime in 2016.

The film is set for release on March 10, 2017, pushed back from an earlier Nov. 2016.
