The "Ghostbusters" film franchise will get a major overhaul with an all new and all-female cast, reports BuzzFeed.
Oscar nominees Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, and "Saturday Night Live" cast members Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are currently in talks to star in the "Ghostbusters" reboot which will be directed by Paul Feig.
Feig himself tweeted a collage photo of the four actresses.
McCarthy and Wiig have both worked with Feig before in "Bridesmaids." Jones became a part of "Saturday Night Live" early last year and was promoted to feature player status. McKinnon, meanwhile has been on "Saturday Night Live" since 2012. She was nominated for an Emmy for her work last year.
In August 2014, Feig signed on to revive "Ghostbusters" with "The Heat" screenwriter Katie Dippold writing the script.
Feig said on his Twitter account that the film is set for release on July 22, 2016.
It has been more than three decades since the first "Ghostbusters" film was shown in theaters, with the follow up to the film coming out five years later. The first two films featured Bill Murray, Dan Ayroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two films, was initially set to direct the third installment of the film franchise but internal problems stalled its development. Ayroyd, Ramis and Hudson agreed to reprise their roles for the film, but Murray begged off from it. Reitman eventually cancelled when Ramis passed away last year.
Feig was then approached to direct "Ghostbusters" as a reboot movie starring an all-female cast.
In an email sent by Sony co-chairman Amy Pascall to Reitman, it was revealed that Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Amy Schumer and Lizzy Kaplan expressed their interest to star in the film, reports Screen Rant.
Rumor has it that "Pitch Perfect" star Rebel Wilson had a meeting with Feig for a possible role in the film.
However, it seems that Lawrence and Stone would not likely appear in the film. Stone was offered the role of "Anna" in the movie, alongside Jonah Hill as "Jeremy." The actress passed on the film. Both stars starred in the film "Superbad" in 2007.
Meanwhile, Lawrence had said that she wanted to be in on the reboot of "Ghostbusters," but no word is out whether or not she would continue with it since she has a lot of film projects on queue.
When asked for his thoughts about the all-female cast of "Ghosbusters," Murray said that he was fine with it and even said that he would go watch the film because the characters would probably have better outfits, reports Screen Rant.
