Aside from the growing trend of 1990s sequels, another Hollywood "in" thing seems to be reboots. First was the "Fantastic Four" reboot now "The Ring" will be given one as well.
2002's massive hit "The Ring" will be getting a reboot due out Nov. 13 of this year. The original film led by Naomi Watts was a massive box office success, recalls Just Jared. The 13-year-old flick took in nearly $250 million worldwide.
According to Empire Online, due to the split between Paramount and DreamWorks, after two releases for "The Ring," earlier talk of a "Ring 3D" has turned into the film due out in a mere 10 months.
Not much is known about the film's plot but given the basic premise of "The Ring," it will probably involve the receipt of a video featuring Samara that will result in a haunting, supernatural force.
"The story involves a video that brings certain death. You look at it, the phone rings, and you find out you have seven days to live. A prologue shows some teenage victims of the dread curse, and then newspaper reporter Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) gets on the case, helped by eerie drawings by her young son, Aidan (David Dorfman)," wrote Roger Ebert in a review for the 2002 horror flick.
The site adds, "Word on the street is that Rings will maintain some sort of continuity with the previous two American films."
While there is no word if Watts or any of the original cast will be appearing in the reboot but it's believed the movie will feature a younger, fresher new cast. The only cast member that has been confirmed is Italian actress Matilda Lutz who will star in the film. "Rings" will make the American cinema debut of Lutz.
"The Ring" was a remake of the 1998 Japanese horror movie, "Ringu" that involved Watts uncovering the tragic mystery behind a haunted old-school VHS tape. Watts returned in a sequel but did not garner the same success as the original.
Paramount is serious about the horror flicks as it plans to release "Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension" during the Halloween season, a year-end "Rings" release and the "Friday the 13th" reboot set for next spring.
The new "Friday the 13th" film will be the 10th installment in the series while "Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension" marks the sixth film for the franchise, which began in 2009, noted Variety.
F. Javier Gutierrez is set direct "Rings" alongside Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald who are serving as producers.
