'American Horror Story' Season 5 Cast & Plot: Jessica Lange Out? Clues Point to 'Operation Top Hat'

Followers of FX Networks' hit TV series, "American Horror Story," would be thrilled to know that the scary anthology show has been renewed for a fifth season. But fans of the show's mainstay, Jessica Lange, might be disappointed as rumors have circulated that the award-winning actress might not return in the next season.

According to a report by Master Herald, a post from show creator Ryan Murphy on his Twitter feed has sparked rumors that Lange would not be returning in the fifth season. Murphy expressed his gratitude to the actress in a tweet, saying, "Thank you Jessica...for everything. Always."

Prior the premier of "Freak Show," the series' fourth season, Lange has already mentioned that she has other plans after the season and would want to explore movie productions next.

The 65-year-old actress told Entertainment Weekly that she craved for more personal time. "It ends up being a lot of time during the year being committed to something," she shared.

Lange added, "I haven't done that for a long time. It's like doing a stage play between the rehearsal and the run. This is a 6-month commitment every year. That will be four years in a row.

"I want to have more time to myself I guess. Once it's over and I have a full year ahead of me with nothing to do, who knows? It might not have been the best decision. But I think four years doing something is a sufficient amount of time."

FX Networks CEO John Landgraf mentioned that he himself is not aware if the actress is returning for a fifth season. While he may be in the loop with a lot of things regarding the show's production, it seems that he has given Murphy the leeway to decide which actors he wants onboard.

Meanwhile, fans of the show have speculated on the upcoming season's possible storyline. According to Inquisitr, season 4's finale may have contained clues indicating the show's direction in the next season.

In the episode "Curtain Call," Massimo's character left Elsa to stay because of his sickly condition. It was hinted that his condition was caused by radioactive bomb tests at the Nevada Test Site, which is called "Operation Top Hat." Fans believe the fifth season would explore this more.

Speaking of the show's future, Landgraf revealed, "One of the things I love so much about that is that it can be radically, radically reinvented in terms of tone, setting, period, characters, cast."

No announcement has been made yet on who would return for the fifth season but the names of Angela Bassett, Lily Rabe and Kathy Bates have all cropped up as being considered for roles in the next leg.
