Marcos Maidana is aiming to bounce back from his defeats to Floyd Mayweather, and his manager, Sebastian Contursi, revealed that the former world welterweight champion is eyeing a showdown against Danny Garcia.
Maidana, who took a unanimous decision loss to Mayweather in their rematch in September just four months after almost handing the pound-for-pound king the first loss of his career, is considering several opponents for his next fight, but Contursi said that a showdown against Garcia is on top of their list.
"It would be a great fight," Contursi told Ringside Radio Argentina via BoxingScene, referring to the Garcia fight.
Maidana, who holds a 35-5 record with 31 knockouts, is planning to return to action in June. However, he will have to move his return date if he wants to face Garcia.
Garcia, who boasts an unblemished 29-0 record with 17 knockout victories, is set to face Lamont Peterson at a catch weight of 143 pounds on April 11. Even if the 26-year-old wins against Peterson, a return fight in June will be too early for Garcia, who is planning to move to the welterweight division.
Robert Garcia, Maidana's trainer, previously confirmed that they are indeed eyeing a fight against Danny Garcia. But aside from Danny Garcia, the world renowned trainer said that there are other intriguing options for Maidana.
"There are other names, such as Amir Khan, Kell Brook," the trainer told ESPN Deportes via BoxingScene. "There are interesting fights, like Danny Garcia if he wants to climb to welterweight, the rematch with Adrien Broner. So there are options. So let's so what happens, but certainly 2015 could be a big year for Chino."
Maidana faced Broner in December 2013 in San Antonio, where the Argentine scored a scintillating unanimous decision victory, which eventually gave him a shot against Mayweather. The 31-year-old is also familiar with Khan, who scored a unanimous decision win against him in December 2010.
Robert Garcia also revealed that they are planning to make a strong push to get a shot against Manny Pacquiao later this year, but the 40-year-old trainer admitted that it is a long shot at this point because of several hurdles.
Aside from the fact that Pacquiao is engaged in talks for the long proposed fight against Mayweather, Maidana is also under influential adviser Al Haymon, who is not in good terms with Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum.
Recent reports also revealed that Pacquiao, the reigning World Boxing Organization welterweight champion, is also expected to prioritize a fight against Khan if the talks for the Mayweather fight will not come to fruition.
