Children with mental conditions have to be treated and attended by child psychiatrists but a new study shows but most of them were only able to consult and attended by pediatricians.

According to cbsnews.com, scientists from MassGeneral Hospital for Children in Boston have conducted a study and learned that 35 percent of children who seek for mental health care are being attended by primary care pediatricians only while 26 percent was able to at least consult psychiatrists and 15 percent was consulted social workers or psychologists.

The result of the study was analyzed from the data of 43,000 children who are 2 to 21 years old and are outpatient form 2008 to 2011. The study showed that more children with ADHD are being attended by primary care physicians compared to children with anxiety and mood disorder. Also, children who saw pediatricians were prescribed psychotropic medications.

The study showed that a lot of children suffering from different mental health issues are not receiving proper medication and attention needed for them to recover. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that "millions of children in the United States live with depression, anxiety, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, Tourette syndrome and other mental health issues."

Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson, executive director of Digital Health at Seattle Children's Hospital and a pediatrician at The Everett Clinic in Mill Creek, Washington said "We've been supporting and nurturing children with mental health problems for years. We know with ADHD or anxiety that it's likely they'll be talking with their pediatrician, but I was surprised that half of kids aren't being seen for these diagnoses by their PCPs."

According to huffingtonpost.com, the findings of MassGeneral Hospital for Children's study has revealed that one in 10 school-age children in the United States has a mental health condition, and there are not enough child psychiatrists to care for them."

Though the study hasn't included the data from mental health care provided by schools juvenile justice programs and child-welfare agencies and from those children who are suffering from mental health issues but not seeking for help, the study had showed that an alarming number of children are needing mental health care attention.
