"The Walking Dead" Season 6 premiered this week with surprisingly low ratings. Some fans are now worried that the AMC series might be axed.

According to Variety, the total number of viewers during the show's premiere episode for Season 6 was estimated at 14.6 million. It is reportedly relatively low compared to Season 5's premiere which garnered 17.3 million viewership.

Despite its low ratings, iDigital Times reported that "The Walking Dead" Season 6 still remains to be the most popular show on social media. At least one million tweets about the series were recorded on Twitter alone.

Meanwhile, the upcoming episodes of "The Walking Dead" will feature intense scenes. Series creator Robert Kirkman dished at the New York Comic Con 2015 panel that Season 6 is the most exciting of them all.

"This is going to be the most intense season of 'The Walking Dead' yet. The first few episodes hit the ground running. There's big cliffhangers every episode. I'm watching cuts and I'm like, 'Oh I got to watch the next one.' I hope viewers respond the same way," he said.

The upcoming second episode of "The Walking Dead" Season 6 will also focus on Carol (Melissa McBride), who will be switching from her battered wife character to a badass zombie killer in "JSS."

In other news, fans are still worried that "The Walking Dead" might not be picked up by AMC for more seasons in the future. This has been a common trend among shows whose ratings have lowered considerably.

However, it's still very early to predict the fate of the show because only one episode of "The Walking Dead" has aired so far. This means that audience viewership can still change in the coming weeks.

"The Walking Dead" Season 6 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC. The series also stars Andrew Lincoln, Steven Yuen, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus and more.
