That large flat-screen TV may look gorgeous above your fireplace, but is it a good idea at all? It may seem picture-perfect to have that TV hanging over there, but there are some things you need to consider first to see if above or near the fireplace is the best place to mount your TV.
While it may be common to see a flat TV hanging over a fireplace, experts do not encourage homeowners to do so. More than the damaging the electronics, mounting a TV over a fireplace affects viewing experience and viewer comfort.
A fireplace adds heat and smoke
First, having a TV above the fireplace exposes it to smoke coming from the burning wood. Over time, a smoke film can build up not just on the outside but inside the TV cabinet as well. Also, the heat emitted by the fireplace adds to the heat already generated by the TV.
Electronic devices such as TVs, wok best at low temperatures such that excessive heat can hasten the degradation of certain materials. This is the reason why TVs have vented enclosures so heat from the inside can escape. Some electric fireplaces, though, don't produce heat or produce heat less than 5,000 BTU/hour, making them a good alternative if you want to have a TV over a fireplace.
Optimal viewing experience may not be achieved
Placing the TV above the fireplace can also put the viewing height and angle in conflict with what the manufacturer recommended. Typically, the center of the TV screen should be at eye level when you are sitting.
Often, the placement causes the viewer to watch above the eye level causing neck pains and headaches. Also, poor posture can lead to improper breathing, which causes certain muscles in the body to be overused; thus, another source of pain.

Is it ever acceptable to install a TV over your fireplace?
Of course, you can still have that gorgeous TV placed above your fireplace and achieve that intimate, perfect cinematic experience. First, the temperature around the spot should be conducive to having a TV hanging over it, ideally, below 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Sometimes, when your space is not big enough to accommodate your TV, over the fireplace seems to be the most logical space to have a TV mounted. And if your house has recessed niches and connections intended specifically for TV mounting, then use that space by all means.
Also, there are ways to disperse or deflect heat away from your TV, such as using a mantel; not only will it help keep heat away from the device but also enhance the aesthetics of your fireplace.
Another way to accommodate your TV is by recessing the fireplace back into an alcove. Not only is it stylish and modern, but it also allows you to hide unsightly cables and wires from your device.
You can also use a motorized or tilting wall mount to allow you to adjust the viewing angle of your TV and improve the picture quality. And lastly, hire a professional to install your TV. They can also provide you tips and suggestions to optimize your viewing experience.
