'Cursed' Hollywood Mansion Tied to Brittany Murphy's Tragic Death and Britney Spears' Ghostly Encounters Listed for $18M

The infamous Hollywood Hills mansion previously owned by Britney Spears and the late Brittany Murphy is now on sale for $18 million. The twist: it has a dark history.

The Hollywood Hills mansion at 1895 Rising Glen Road, Los Angeles, has changed hands a few times over the years but has been famously associated with Spears and Murphy. The current owners, who purchased the property in 2020, put the mansion up for sale for an asking price of $17,995,000.

The listing is currently handled by David Parnes of Carolwood Estates. The listing also notes that the mansion has been "reborn" and has undergone redesigning and refreshing of its interior and outdoor living spaces, according to PEOPLE Magazine.

The Mansion's Dark History

The mansion's dark reputation stems from the untimely deaths of Clueless actress Murphy and her husband, Simon Monjack. On Dec. 20, 2009, Murphy - who purchased the home from Speakers for nearly $4 million in 2003 - suddenly collapsed and died at the age of 32.

Sharon Murphy, the actress' mother, called 911 following her daughter's collapse and said she had been experiencing flu-like symptoms for a few days. The actress was rushed to Sinai Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Her sudden death shocked Hollywood and led to conspiracy theories and speculations about the cause. However, a coroner later ruled that she died of pneumonia, iron deficiency anemia, and multiple drug intoxication.

Less than six months after her death, Monjack died from pneumonia and anemia as well. He was 39 at the time of his death. In 2013, Linda Monjack, Simon's mother, said her son hallucinated "things crawling out of his skin" prior to his death.

Britney Spears' Experience

Before selling the house to Murphy, Spears said she felt there was an open "spirit portal" in the house and claimed there were "bad spirits" trying to push her down the stairs, per Hindustan Times, citing the pop star's former makeup artist Julianne Kaye. The feeling got so bad that Spears opted to stay at a hotel instead.

It can be noted that Murphy had also expressed discomfort staying at the house, saying she felt the home was "unlucky." She would also often request to stay at hotels instead of returning home.

The house has been listed multiple times in recent years but has struggled to find buyers. It now features 9,400 square feet of living space, six bedrooms, and nine bathrooms, according to a Zillow listing.
