JK Rowling Reveals New Harry Potter Backstory About Petunia Dursley

On Dudley Dursley's birthday, J.K. Rowling reveals a backstory about Petunia Dursley and Vernon Dursely's role in the book and movie sequel.

"Harry Potter" has long left the screens and the pages of J.K. Rowling's books for quite some time. She is currently catering to "Fantastic Beasts and How To Find Them" franchise which is also related to the Harry Potter series. However, on Dudley Dursley's birthday last June 23, J.K, Rowling entrances, yet again, the die hard fans of Harry Potter through the "Pottermore" fan site. According to Time, J.K. Rowling has consistently talked about the world of "Harry Potter" through her Twitter account and has recently posted an additional fact about the Dursleys last Tuesday.

The revelation talked about how Vernon and Petunia Dursley's relationship was before Harry was born. When the two were still engaged, Rowling revealed that Vernon already had insecurities about Harry's father, James. It was said that he would always patronize him by asking about his ride. Since Vernon had a nice ride that time, he wanted to boast to James about how he was better than him as James shared his flying broomstick as a competition to Vernon's sweet ride. Furthermore, Petunia, being the sister of Harry's mother Lily, has felt several insecurities about her sister. Rowling said that Petunia hated the idea that her sister was praised for being the witch in the family and that she was always on the spotlight leaving Petunia as a mere shadow to Lily's attributes.

According to Telegraph, Harry was mistreated and always bullied by the Dursleys, especially Vernon because the latter felt that Harry was a mirror of the man that he despised on before: Harry's father. Rowling also adds that she wanted to redeem the character of Petunia during the final book "The Deathly Hallows" of the "Harry Potter" series. However, she said that she wanted to retain the unlikeable character of Petunia wherein she just kept her last goodbye to Harry as ill as she has always treated her nephew.
