"Minions Update": The Yellow Henchmen Went For Gold In Box Office; Hits $115.2 Million On Its First Day

"Minions" hits the theater on Saturday and it has raked in $115.2 million on its first day. The yellow henchmen have broken into the box office.

According to The Wrap, Universal and Illumination Entertainment's little yellow helpers have made it into its huge opening, following the success of studio's other films like "Jurassic World," "Furious 7" and "Pitch Perfect 2," which have exceeded the $100 million mark.

"Minions" has landed the second biggest opening weekend of all time for the category of animated movies. "Shrek the Third" still holds the record as the first, which has $121.6 million debut in 2007.

USA Today compares the appeal of "Minions" and "SpongeBob" to fans. It says that these cute little gibberish-spouting yellow (and some purplish) creatures have some pop-culture force. "They're bigger than SpongeBob (SquarePants). They just have that mass appeal right now and are basically a merchandiser's dream," senior box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations Jeff Bock said.

In addition, "Minions" movie has held the record of having to haul $46.2 million on a Friday. It has said to be the "best single day ever for a cartoon feature." The movie of these yellow henchmen has added further success of the two preceding movies of "Despicable Me," which gained $600 million in the U.S and $1.5 billion worldwide.

News Max says that the little yellow helpers have also triumphed in the world box office with $124.3 million, knocking down the "Terminator: Genisys" that went no. 1 last week but only made $47.3 million worldwide.

Chris Meledandri, producer of "Despicable Me" movies, Ice Age: The Meltdown" and "Horton Hears a Who," has emerged victorious considering the success of his recent movie "Minions." The said spinoff movie of "Despicable Me" movies is said to be less expensive compared to the movies produced by Pixar and DreamWorks.

"Minions" also had a marketing campaign from McDonald Meals including packages from Amazon and other companies that have their merchandise.
